Description:

Technical improvements in the different intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) techniques allowed to achieve highly conformal dose coverage in target volumes, while sparing nearby healthy tissue due to high dose gradients at the edges of the treated volumes. Patientspecific quality assurance (PSQA) plays a vital role in assuring the accuracy and safety of the radiation therapy treatment process. The advent of commercially available software capable of estimating the dose delivered to the patient represents a paradigm shift in PSQA where the gamma index method is predominately used. This opens the possibility of evaluating a plan in terms of dose–volume histograms (DVHs), which offers additional meaningful information and assists with the decision-making process as to whether a plan should proceed to treatment. Furthermore, patient specific quality assurance of the treatment plans can monitor the deliverability and robustness of the treatments. In addition to the various gamma index methods several types of commercial software are available at the National Institute of Oncology, Budapest including Varian Mobius 3D QA and SunNuclear SunCheck. The candidate can be involved in the comparative analysis of the available patient-specific quality assurance software and methods. The PhD topic is strongly connected to the R&D activities of the National Institute of Oncology. On behalf of the National Institute of Oncology, the co-supervisor (50-50%) of the topic is Prof. Tibor Major (major.tibor@oncol.hu)
